In January 1999, I converted my massage practice into a massage therapy office that employed both male and female therapists.
I started hiring other massage therapists to work for me. I needed to hire other therapists because I was already doing 25-30 massage appointments every week. I needed to focus on marketing and growing the massage therapy office instead of just doing massages.
I continued to grow that massage therapy office, and in February 2003, I expanded it into a complete massage therapy center with a retail gift shop and seven treatment rooms. I even had a staff break room with a full kitchen, TV, and even a VCR!
It didn't take long before I started having other people seeking me out for my business expertise.
These requests came from all over the world. So in 2004, I created Help Your Practice with the help of Eric Mitchell, an extremely successful personal trainer.
Now it may sound naive, but I didn't realize that it would be so difficult to juggle so many activities at once.
I was running a massage therapy center that employed seven other massage therapists… doing 12-15 massage therapy appointments personally each week… writing all of the marketing and advertising for the center… doing most of the adminstrative work… and building Help Your Practice, all at the same time.
I was working 80-90 hours each week and hardly ever seeing my friends or family. My wife and I wanted to start a family but when could we do that?
I was working so many hours that I felt like I hardly had any free time left. How could I help raise a family when I was always working and was never home?
I wrestled with this personal dilemma for about a year, until early 2005 when I decided to close my massage therapy center and go back into private practice.
I didn't close the massage therapy center because it had failed. By industry standards, it was actually quite successful. I closed the massage therapy center because I came to the realization that:

Today, I have the career of my dreams. I do massage therapy in my own private practice four days each week and maintain a full-time client schedule.
Because I am no longer working 80-90 hours weekly running a massage therapy center, I have more time to help other massage therapists. As a result, I have become even busier as a massage business consultant.
Even other industries contacted me for consulting help. So in early 2006, I finally agreed to accept non-massage business consulting clients. Those industries pay me alot of money to tap into my marketing expertise… but the good news, you don't have to pay me a single penny.
There are two major ways that my advice differs from many of the other massage therapy consultants:
I still actively perform massage therapy… so I'm in touch with current industry trends and what clients are asking for. I continue to do massage because I love doing massage. Some of the other industry experts giving out advice haven't done a professional massage in years…or have ever done one at all! |
